KITCHEN DESIGN

Kitchen design is a large topic, covering space planning, appliance selection, decoration with flooring, finishes, colors and hardware. You could be looking to design a new kichen and want ideas on different styles or you could be remodeling and looking to choose different finishes for your cabinetry. Whatever your kitchen position, there is information and ideas for you here.

We know that the kitchen is the central hub of every home, even if you don't cook in it, it still houses the refrigerator and we access that frequently! If you do cook, then you will be particular about where everything is stored and placed in your kitchen environment. The kitchen makes up a large focus of interior design and is often one of the major areas of the house that people consider when looking at purchasing a new home because it is one area that costs a lot to alter.

As with all aspects of interior design, the design only works to it's potential if we can see it! To be able to see the kitchen design, we require well thought out kitchen lighting design.

Lighting design always sounds like a difficult task, but broken down into small areas of design it becomes manageable for the beginner designer or the home decorator. There are basically four types of lighting that should be considered when planning lighting design for your kitchen.

These four types of lighting are ambient lighting, decorative lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is the general light or overall illumination of the kitchen space. It is often achieved with simple recessed down lights using incandescent or fluorescent lamps which provide a basic glare free general light.

Decorative Lighting

As a designer this is your show piece lighting in the kitchen. It is used more for decorative purposes than functional. This is often achieved by using pendant lights, chandeliers or decorative fittings (depending on the style of kitchen) over kitchen islands, breakfast bars, or kitchen tables.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is easy to remember as it entails creating adequate light to carry out tasks in the kitchen, usually on the kitchen counter and other related work areas. This is often achieved by using under cabinet lighting to illuminate the counter or bench top and reduce shadows from the other forms of lighting used. The fittings are often simple fluorescent tube fittings as they are not seen, or if there isn't any overhead cabinetry, a simple bulkhead with small recessed halogen cabinet fittings work well also.

Accent Lighting

This is also an easy type of lighting to remember as it simply means to highlight or accent a feature. This is often achieved by using small halogen spot lights, depending on the style of kitchen, these can be decorative fittings and used as a feature or simple recessed adjustable down lights. They are generally used to focus light on cabinetry features, artwork, display cabinetry or overhead features like hanging pot racks.

The world or interior decoration is constantly requiring individuals to beautify the interior of homes and businesses. In choosing a career in interior decorating you are basically ensuring yourself of a job. There is an affluence of other benefits to becoming an interior decorator as well.

The career has so much freedom associated with it and within this freedom one can easily express their creativity. Many decorators feel that the ability to be imaginative and truly watch their ideas unfold before them is perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this particular career. Along with this, the possibility of meeting many new people exists and even doing some traveling is feasible, that is if you are successful enough in your endeavours. Accompanying the freedom associated with interior decorating as a career is the prospect of being your own boss, which many people find rather exciting and alluring.

Clearly the advantages of this career are quite abundant. On top of the aforementioned benefits, an ambitious individual can earn at least a six figure salary as well. What's more there exists that possibility that you will be able to view and visit many beautiful homes throughout the duration of your career. If you choose to expand your expertise into the realm of decorating for businesses, there are quite a few types of businesses that you could work for. Hotels, restaurants, spas and even art galleries frequently employ interior decorators.

You may be surprised to find out that there is very little education required to become an interior decorator as well. While there are post-secondary programs available, they are not exactly required. They may, however, increase your chances for success. It has been suggested that you do not even need experience, though it helps. Regardless, all that is necessary is a little guidebook reading, creativity and a lot of determination.
